Learn Spanish in Tenerife for Almost Nothing – Why State Language Schools Are a Hidden Gem
If you want to learn Spanish in Tenerife for a very low price, the best option by far are the state-run language schools, known as Escuela Oficial de Idiomas (EOI).
These are public, government-funded schools, which is why they are so affordable. A full academic year costs less than 100 euros, with students usually paying around 30–40 euros per semester. Compared to private language schools, these fees are purely symbolic.
One of the best examples on the island is the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas in Icod de los Vinos, located in the north of Tenerife. This school offers not only regular Spanish courses focused on grammar, reading, writing and listening, but also additional conversation classes, which are extremely valuable if you want to start speaking with confidence.
What makes EOI Icod de los Vinos stand out is its very active school life. Students can take part in:
- conversation groups,
- language cafés,
- cultural and social events,
- themed celebrations and integration activities.
The school also participates in Erasmus+ programmes, offering international exchanges and trips abroad. This is a big advantage, as not all EOI schools on Tenerife offer Erasmus opportunities or extra conversation courses.
I especially recommend the EOI in Icod de los Vinos, because I attend this school myself and I am currently in my third year of studying there. From personal experience, I can say that the atmosphere is friendly, the teachers are engaged, and the school really supports students in using Spanish in real-life situations, not just in the classroom.
Besides Icod de los Vinos, state language schools (EOI) can also be found in:
- Puerto de la Cruz
- La Laguna
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife
- Los Cristianos
All of these schools are part of the public education system and therefore offer very low-cost courses, but if you are looking for extra activities, conversation classes and Erasmus exchanges, EOI Icod de los Vinos is one of the best choices on the island.
If you live in Tenerife or plan a longer stay, learning Spanish at an Escuela Oficial de Idiomas is one of the most affordable and effective ways to integrate and improve your language skills — without spending a fortune. All you need is N.I.E. and your own motivation.
